Although co-op advertising policies differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, most will pay a portion of the advertising costs and supply the retailer with photos or graphics to use in the ad (or sometimes the entire ad itself), whether for print, radio or television. A manufacturer's contribution to a cooperative advertising campaign can range from a large amount of money to promotional gimmicks and point-of-purchase displays.

Using co-op advertising cuts down not only on your media costs but also on your ad production and creative expenses as well. A smart advertiser will factor co-op advertising, if available, into his or her budget. The major drawback to co-op advertising is that some manufacturers have more restrictive programs than others.    

Another form of cooperative advertising is sponsored by shopping districts or centers, which feature an advertisement from each retailer in the shopping center. These promotions are often found in local newspapers for back-to-school specials, St. Valentine's Day, Fourth of July, Mother's Day, Father's Day and so on.

Be careful to coordinate any co-op advertising you do within your overall marketing scheme. Only use co-op advertising if it meets your needs. If you've chosen a different approach in your advertising campaign, don't switch in midstream just to take advantage of free advertising dollars.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of co-op advertising:

Keep careful records of how much you've purchased from each supplier. If you try something unusual, such as a sales video or catalog, get prior approval from each vendor before proceeding. If you're preparing your own ads, work with an advertising professional to prepare an ad you think will appeal to the manufacturer. Keep in mind the image the manufacturer presents in its own ads. Make sure your company's name stands out in the ad. Your goal is not so much to sell the supplier's product but to get customers into your store. If a manufacturer has no established co-op program in place, pitch your ad campaign to the vendor anyway. Expect vendors to help out; after all, you're bringing them business. If your vendor doesn't offer co-op advertising money, you should look for another vendor who does. Be sure to follow up. Money goes only to those who submit claims.

πŸ’™When people enter keywords into an online search box, they have a pain. They have a need. They have a question they want answered. They want to be served the solution in the form of information as to how they can resolve their problem.   

Your job as a marketer is to put yourself in their shoes. You must ask yourself: What keywords are my ideal prospects going to type into Google or Bing? If you don't know the right keywords that your prospects are asking, then your online advertising campaigns aren't going to send you much qualified traffic. To create effective campaigns, you should ask yourself:

-What behavioral category does this keyword fall in (browse, shop or buy)?
-Can I refine a browse keyword into one or more shop keywords?
-Can I refine a shop keyword into one or more buy keywords?
-As you come up with each keyword, you'll want to categorize it into one of the three categories. This step will come in handy while you are structuring your campaigns, writing your ads and setting your initial bids.

As you start building your keyword list, you're going to be doing little more than guessing. By using the right analytical tools and performing the right analysis, you'll expand your keywords and hone the list down by improving or eliminating under-performing keywords.

Step 1: Brainstorming. The logical place to start is by brainstorming about the kinds of keywords that are relevant to your customers and jotting them down on a pad of paper or in an electronic document.

As with any brainstorming, don't edit yourself. Error on the side of having more keywords rather than less. Later, you'll see that the actual results of your campaign will edit you by telling you which keywords work and which don't.

Try to go beyond just one- or two-word keywords. You want to own niches, so think in terms of key phrases so you can dominate when a searcher looks for something specific that is relevant to what you have to sell.

Step 2: Scour your marketing collateral. If you have an established business, you'll want to sort through pamphlets, brochures, websites, retail boxes and any other marketing copy you have available. You can also use your competitors' websites as well. Paid search landing pages are particularly good for this, as these pages have often been optimized for the most profitable keywords. A quick scan of a few well-known common businesses will result in additional keywords.

Step 3: Focus on horizontal and vertical expansion using third-party tools. Your next step is to augment your brainstorming results with third-party keyword suggestion tools. Both Bing and Google provide these tools, which will generate related terms for any keyword you type in.

Why do the search engines provide these tools? They want you to expand your keyword lists because that means you're likely to spend more money with them. And even if your ads don't show up, the auction-style nature of paid search means your bids will force other advertisers to pay higher prices.

What this means to you is that while you should use these tools to help seed your lists, don't take them as gospel. The data points they provide can be incomplete, misleading or even downright incorrect. For this reason, you should use multiple tools because no keyword-research tool could ever be complete because the universe of potential keywords is very large. Play it safe and consult multiple sources.

Step 4: Multiply your keyword list with permutations and synonyms. Next inspect your keywords to develop synonym lists. These lists will consist of phrases that are interchangeable (even if they don't mean precisely the same thing). You'll then merge them to create new permutations to add to your list.

Step 5: Remove duplicates. Look over your new, larger list of keywords, and remove any duplicate keywords from your list.

Step 6: Remove any keywords that are a poor match for your website. Finally, work through the list and remove any keywords that you suspect won't be relevant for your campaign. This will help reduce the amount of work you'll perform later on while organizing your keywords. If you aren't sure about a phrase, it may help to paste it into a search engine and see what kind of organic search results come up. If they still don't appear relevant to your campaign, then delete the keyword phrase from your list.

Choosing the keywords you're going to target is probably the most important part of running your search marketing. You should strive to develop a long list of highly specific "shop" and "buy" keywords. The best way to do this is by using a combination of elbow grease and third-party tools.

KEYWORD RESEARCH:

You can use Google keyword tools to check which are the best keywords for your website and you can view estimates of monthly traffic for each keyword. Once you have a good list of keywords you need to apply them to your web pages. I would only suggest using 3 keywords per web page, any more than this will look Spammy and unnatural.

META TAGS:

Insert your selected keywords into your Meta Title and Meta Description (forget the Meta Keyword tag). Your Meta tags need to look natural and sound like an advert with your keywords inserted. This will attract people to click on your result on Google and help the search engines understand what keywords you want to be ranked for. This needs to be done on all web pages throughout your site.

CONTENT:


Adding high quality content containing your keywords on all web pages will help your Internet Marketing UK no end. It is important that you do not copy content from any other website, it needs to be 100% unique and from your own head. If possible, try and write 300-500 words per web page and mentioning your keywords once or twice at the mots. Forget about keyword density as it will probably damage your Internet marketing.

So, what if?

What if instead of looking to GET paid for being told what to do we looked for ways to PROVIDE value? Hmmm.

Then the next question is…

How do we provide value?

— Solve a problem or provide a solution to a problem
— Save someone (or an organization) time, energy or money
When we’re solely focused on “getting” for ourselves then we’re listening for orders. It’s the voice that yells…

“Just tell me what to do!”

In that mindset we’re not listening for opportunities — for problems to solve, for time/energy/money to save. We’re not aware of the squeaky wheels that need grease. We’re not aware of the opportunities masquerading as complaints from others. So, let’s define your professional value.

Spend some time listening. What are the problems out there that need solutions? How could you help someone (or an organization) save more time, energy and/or money?

How could the solutions to these challenges overlap with something you enjoy doing?

Beyond that, how could these solutions be meaningful and truly beneficial to others besides yourself?

This is the path to providing true value. And it may be easier to do than simply finding orders to follow.

Think of it this way. There are two guys competing for the same gig. One guy is waiting to be told what to do. The other is taking the initiative, finding opportunities to improve a situation.

Which one would you hire?

And when things get lean again — and they will — the guy who provides true value won’t be waiting to ‘get’ something. His trained awareness will find a way to provide it. And people pay for what they truly value.
